New Hampshire post hardcore/metalcore group In Shallows have returned with a no-holds-barred burner of a track in “World Fire”. Hot off the tail of their TikTok-boosted hit “Venom”, the band are out to prove that they’re far more than a viral curiosity. The group, based out of Keene, almost launch into a crunchy Linkin Park-esque opening which segues into a truly brutal verse featuring guitar work reminiscent of sonic contemporaries blessthefall, Erra and Crown The Empire. Countering this assault is a melodic and unwaveringly indignant chorus that could have come directly off the Warped Tour stage.
Lyrically, the chorus powers through with an almost prophetic undertone: “Forging our destiny, no longer will we sleep, stealing our breath to light the world fire”. With all that’s happening in the world currently, it’s not hard to make the connection between recent events and the song’s message. Instrumentally the band are virtually flawless. The riffs are tight and powerful, the bass rides underneath with a satisfactory grind and rumble, and the drums move the song forward utilising pummeling double kick patterns. When the band reaches the inevitable breakdown, it feels earned and not just obligatorily placed for the sake of convention. While the band has a great sound and executes their parts with precision, the unfortunate truth is that this particular flavour of metalcore is being done by virtually everyone and their grandma’s at the moment. In Shallows’ future success depends on being able to cut through the noise and give listeners a reason to stick with this song- because if no one hears it, it’ll be a damn shame.
