Interview - Break Fate

Break Fate are a duo from London, UK, who consist of Ricky & Mashana. Break Fate released their debut LP "Ferocity" in 2020 during the COVID lockdowns, and have now gone on to release a further 3 tracks, sparking a few questions. I spoke to Mashana regarding what we can expect from their new music, and also took a look back in time at their debut album.

1. So jumping into your latest track "Wild Bright Eyes". What was the lyrical inspiration behind this track? I was going to say it's a song that holds a lot of emotion in for the listener, but most of your tracks are like that.

Great question. The lyrical inspiration came from this feeling that Ricky had of writing a Break Fate love song. He wanted it to centre around the moment where someone tells you they love you just by looking at you. He wanted to focus on the eyes of a loved one and from that the title of the song (Wild Bright eyes” was born. The rest of the song just fell in place from this concept of being seen by a loved one and being loved by them.

2. How do you feel your newest tracks, WBR, Internal Heckler and CTW, are being received?

The reception has been great. Each song has reached new listeners and our family of listeners has grown! From the jump, we wanted the songs to be fresh and new. To be much tighter from a lyrical and musical stand point. Thankfully our efforts have been recognised by our listeners which is so encouraging to us because it tells us we’ll stepping in the right direction. Especially with the other songs currently awaiting their release.

3. You've teased a new single on your social media. Can we have an exclusive on this and what we can expect?

Ah! So the new single is called ‘Come On’ and it’s a loud, synthy motivational song we wrote about being at rock bottom but remembering to not give up but rather push through and endure. Expect that classic Break Fate positivity and high energy and expect your neck to break from all the head banging. I would recommend you invest in a neck brace. The song will be out later in October.

4. Furthermore to expectations, I assume following the release will have an announcement of a record. Am I right in thinking that? Can you give us an insight into what that may be like?

Yes. Yes. The record will be out shortly after the single. We’re releasing an EP and it’s called ‘In Awe Honesty’. In our minds, the EP is a book and each song is a chapter with its own world and story. Whereas our previous LP was more of a cohesive story. We hope it shows our listeners that we are evolving and still finding our voice but also aiming to make great music whilst doing so.

5. Going back to Ferocity, your debut album, what was it like putting that out there and knowing how well it was received, especially with you knowing that it lifted spirits in the covid-19 period?

It was such a relief. One of the most fulfilling and satisfying things we’ve ever done not only as musicians but as creatives too. And the positive reception made it all the more rewarding. We feed off that energy till this day. We still can’t believe we dropped an album in our first musical effort and people were into it. So awesome.

6. What's happening with live shows? Is this something you're ever going to look at anytime soon?

The question everyone keeps asking hahaha! We’ve been under the radar with shows lately. We’re just so busy keeping the Break Fate machine running because we do it all ourselves. But with the release of the EP, we wanna do nothing but gig and promote our baby to the world.

7. I saw a social post saying you were going through a few different name ideas before settling on Break Fate. What were some of the other options?

Man, the other options were terrible haha! We had misty mountains, kingdom come and I think I recommended nut sack but Ricky said no for some strange reason. I wonder why. But anyway, Break Fate fell into our laps from the universe and we’re thankful we went with that and not nut sack.

8. As mentioned earlier on, all your tracks hold a lot of emotion, and have some brilliantly inspirational quotes in them. What is your favourite lyric you have come up with, and why?

This is a great question. We argue about this all the time. We hold several lyrics dearly to our hearts. For the sake of staying current, we’ll focus on the new songs that have just come out. And I think the stand out lyric would be “you change my mind like the English weather”. Because it says soooo much with so little words. It’s one of those lyrics were we don’t know how it came together but it did and it made sense because that’s what the song wanted and it’s so so so smart.
