We spoke to Gone Stereo about their local scene in Long Island, their split EP, and what is coming next!
Hello! How are we? You've had a string of singles being released ever since 2022. Will these tracks be put onto a record all together? Or do you have a brand new wave of singles ready to be released onto a record?
Hi there! Thank you for taking the time to interview me. The singles that were released won’t be included on an album. However, we do have some of them on a free CD that we hand out at our shows. We are currently writing and have a lot of material. You might even see an album from us soon!
You most recently released a split EP called "Bridges and Tunnels" with the band "Something Bitter," why did you decide to do a split EP with this guys?
We heard about Something Bitter through the grapevine, and it was through them that we met and ultimately onboarded our drummer, Danny. Over the past year, we played a few shows together, and we absolutely love their music. We thought it would be a great idea to collaborate and put something out together.
Your two tracks open the record up, with "Sad Turtles" and "Cut the Rope," what was the inspiration behind the lyrics for these tracks?
I write in a very unique way, at least that’s how I perceive it. Sometimes, I re-use lyrics I’ve written in the past. I have boxes and journals filled with words, some of which are new ideas that spontaneously come to mind. When I was collaborating with Sad Turtles, I used a combination of old and new lyrics. I was reminiscing about a time when every weekend was a party, and I didn’t care about the next day or what was happening. I simply wanted to stay in that moment because I didn’t want to confront the issues I was grappling with throughout the week. On the other hand, Cut The Rope was quite new. I was thinking about a mystical person who was obsessed and blinded by their hopelessness.
Before your EP, arguably your best single "Meet me at the Garvies" was released. How do you feel that track has been received by your fanbase?
I’m so happy to hear that you enjoyed that tune! We believe it has been well received, by its success on both Spotify and Apple Music. In fact, it has become our second most listened to song on our Spotify quite quickly!
Which track of yours do you feel translates best from recording to live show?
I know everyone has their own take on this, but I genuinely believe that “I’m So Sick” sounds even better live. The recording captures the exact same energy, and it’s a blast to perform.
What is your favourite thing about performing live?
Music is our passion! We’ve been making and playing it since we were teens, and it’s amazing that we can still do it today. When the crowd gets into it, you just feel the energy and it’s like nothing else!
What would be your dream venue to play?
I know we all have different preferences, but I’d love to play the Paramount in Huntington, NY or The Rooftop at Pier 17 in NYC. It’s become a bit of a dream of mine to perform at either one. Fingers crossed!
How do you find the scene in Long Island specifically? What change would you hope to see, if any at all?
Back in the day, the Long Island scene was quite different from what it is now. While there are some positive aspects, I’d say there aren’t many places to play original music. Personally, I think cover bands are more popular these days. I would also love to see more venues, particularly those that cater to all ages.
What are the plans for the next 12 months?
Things are getting busy for us next weekend! We’ve got three shows lined up this February, including our highly anticipated Split EP release show on February 15th. As mentioned before, we’ve been hard at work writing new material and figuring out the best way to share it with you all. We’ve even submitted our music to a few festivals, and we’re keeping our fingers crossed that we’ll get a chance to perform there or at the Paramount or The Rooftop at Pier 17 soon!
