Interview - The New Normal

Q. Your EP “Not Yours” came out in October 2023. How do you think that has been received?
Cathy – I don’t think any of us quite expected how far this EP would take us. From the sold out EP launch, to the radio play, to the international acts we had the opportunity to support this year...it’s definitely been a busy year since the release!

Q. We can see the passion in your music from the EP and it’s clear to see the inspiration around the lyrics. How do you feel spreading your message through music differs to other methods?
Cathy – I love a song that has lyrics I can relate to personally. They become a bit of an anthem for me. I guess that’s always been my hope with our songs – that people can see a little bit of themselves in them and that listening to them lifts them and gives them courage and support. Music helps with that feel-good factor!

Q. We know what inspired your lyrics, but what inspired your instrumentals for this EP?
Neil – Cliché as it is, we always play to our strengths. The rhythm section is driving and I think Carlin gets to throw in his love for all things Peter Hook as the bass lines tend to be more noticeable and tonal than you would usually get in punk rock.

Another thing we do that I’ve only really noticed when looking back at our recordings is that we love doing a build up to any guitar solos. Like we know that someone listening to this is going to have their face melted so we like to prepare them before unleashing.

Q. What is your favourite track you’ve released so far?

Cathy – My favourite track has to be sick. Sick has such a raw energy and singing it is very cathartic. It also gets me dancing.

Carlin – Yea, probably sick for me too. I think it’s a great capsule of what we are about, and our live sound and energy.

Neil – I am caught between OCD and Sick. Sick is just two minutes of complete energy that doesn’t go down a gear. OCD is more on a person level as it came out exactly how I had it in my head.

Paul - I love playing 'Inside' live. We play it right at the start of our set. It's so energetic and really gets me going for the rest of the show.

Q. Can you tell us an interesting/funny/weird fact about the EP?

Carlin – We recorded the entire thing in less than 4 hours.

Neil – It has technically been recorded three times in three different studios. We were a well oiled machine by that point!

Q. How did you decide on the order of the track list?

Carlin – We decided this simply from the poem from Neil’s cousin Jennifer Heron – A letter to an unborn daughter. 'Not Yours' had to follow that poem. We play 'Not Yours' into 'META' every time we play it and 'sick' is a way better closer than 'inside'. We didn’t so much decide on the track listing as much as it just happened for us.

Q. You’ve played quite a few shows over the last 12 months. Which one did you enjoy most?
Cathy – It’s so hard to choose! We have had so much fun this year. I would say maybe the second night of the Dead Fish gigs in Dublin – Brazilian punks are the best people!

Q. What would be your dream venue to play?

Carlin – The Ulster Hall in Belfast. It’s such a beautiful venue with amazing sound. Every time I have seen a band there I have walked away mind blown.

Cathy – Limelight in Belfast – I have been to see so many bands there and spent so many nights there! Imagine getting to be on the stage!

Paul - Same! I've seen so many bands live in the Limelight and it's a dream of mine to be one of those bands and rock the F out there!

Neil – There’s two (sorry for taking so many liberties here!) The Ulster Hall in Belfast, iconic venue and also where (apparently) Led Zeplin played Stairway to Heaven for the first time publicly. Second would be The Barrowlands in Glasgow for pretty much the same reason. It’s just one of those venues that has such a unique energy to it.

Q. If we gave you £100 for a rider, what would you buy with it?

Paul - I would put it into the band pot and use it towards new equipment or recording.

Cathy – So sensible! I'd use it to buy us lunch and a round of pints. We’ve worked so hard this year. We deserve a lil treat.

Carlin – I’d put towards recording since only 2 of us drive and are consequently the only two that drink!

Neil – Two bags of coffee, a box of ibuprofen (gigging in your 30s is fun!) and a bag of Haribo. I don’t tend to eat before a gig (a learned lesson from past shows!)
