New Jersey based pop punk band Sucker Punch release Worst Case Ontario, the lead single from their new EP Better Pleasures. Based on the cult thriller Jennifer’s Body, the track relates to the concept of somebody luring you in, which is portrayed in the film but can also be seen from a more metaphorical viewpoint. The band attempt to convey themes of betrayal and inertia in their distinctive pop punk sound, with some easy core elements to balance out the high levels of emotion. As a song designed to be played live, accompanied with mosh pits and sing alongs from the crowd, the hope is that it will bring excitement and attention surrounding the release of the EP later this year. From the beginning, the most noticeable elements are immediately the drums, bringing a consistent and relentless sound. Next is the classic pop punk sounding vocals, and vocalist Chris Steele‘s has a raspy, slightly grungy aspect in his voice that works really well in the context of the song. As it progresses, some heavier screams are introduced, which feels slightly surprising but expresses the anger and emotional release that the song captures. The chorus has a melodic kind of chanting, which is certainly unique and not difficult to imagine going down really well live. After the chorus, the guitars hit ten times harder, and it’s easy to hear the influence from bands like The Story So Far here. As the song fades out at the end and the focus is on the vocals, it’s almost impossible to have not been won over by their sound.
Lyrically, the song tells a story, and is immediately a favourite for anybody who knows and loves Jennifer’s Body, with the references to the film and the vibe that is created. However, the story that is told is vague enough that it can be its own entity entirely, and the emotions portrayed were clearly strongly felt and put into the lyrics. With a hopeless, angry feeling throughout, it’s easy to relate to and identify with. In the same sense, the memorable chorus can seem upbeat if the lyrics aren’t focused on too much, and this song can easily adapt depending on what the listener needs at the time. As the lead single for their new EP, Sucker Punch have almost definitely established their distinctive sound and created excitement for Better Pleasures. If the only complaint to be had about Worst Case Ontario is that it isn’t long enough, then Sucker Punch have done well.
