Vermont/New York-based New Saviors are breathing new life into the realms of hard rock and metal, and their new single “Garden of Lies” is a solid entry in their already-sizeable back catalogue. It’s the follow up to their Personal Hell EP released earlier in the year, which they supported with 3 successful tours all across the states.
The group, straight out of Bennington, Vermont, have said this song as being “about people who hide behind religion to justify their hateful words and actions.” Heavy subject matter for sure; luckily the band can back up these sentiments with some real riffage. Let’s just get this out of the way: yes, my first thought when hearing this song for the first time was “damn, this sounds like Spiritbox!” The chugging drop-tuned riffs, emotive and at times vulnerable vocals, all coupled with the guttural screams which bookend the chorus; it would be hard to make the claim that New Saviors are particularly original. Nevertheless, the band rocks and the heavy moments are satisfying in their crunchiness. Michaela King is a great vocalist and performs some acrobatic runs across the song’s 3:18 running time. If you’re like me and are into bands like Breaking Benjamin, Sevendust, A Day To Remember etc, then this could scratch your itch for a while, or at least until New Saviors drop a new single.
