Last Saturday night I returned to my hometown of Hull, to see Hot Milk at The Welly. It's nice to have an emo/pop-punk gig in Hull, they're so infrequent and the city is often overlooked, even though the shows always seem to be rowdy and well-sold. At least on this occasion, the East-Yorkshire crowd gave a great account of themselves by keeping the energy up all night.
Opening the set was newest & atmospheric single "Where Does The Light Get In?" which set people swaying from the off, before pummeling straight into "Horror Show" which got the crowd livened up and started the incessant pitting for the next hour or so. It's hard not to love Hot Milk, Han is just so animated up there on stage and even when they're not performing, the strongest Manc accent just shines through the banter on stage, Han even gave out a pit lord half way through the night, so I'm sure they were delighted.
Hot Milk powered through their set, before reaching fan-favourite "Candy Coated Lies" in which they invited one of the lucky gig-goers on stage with them to complete the final chorus. We must also mention "Breathing Underwater" live, it is a breath-taking track on record, but once played live with a full room singing it back at you, gives you goosebumps as you hear the raw-emotion coming out of the vocals from the band.
It seems as though Hot Milk were trying to play some deep cuts, but truth be told, they are all equally popular and loved! They played a nice set spanning from their first ever single, to their latest single, and all the tracks in-between. Sure, they disappointed a few people by missing out "Take Your Jacket" (which I saw was well requested on their socials) but the only complaint you could have it that it went way too quickly.
It was very hot, and very sweaty, but the band came out for one last song, the intro for Glass Spiders came on which sent everyone into delerium for one last boogy to end the evening.
For a band that I have loved since their inception, and they got me through a lot of the Covid years, it really is surprising this was only my 2nd time seeing them, and the first in a venue setting. But I know I'll be back.
Is there a secret to saying goodbye? The secret is that it isn't a goodbye, it's a see you next time!
